History & architecture

The Paul Keres Memorial in Pärnu stands on Kuninga Street in front of the school building where the future chess player studied from 1930 to 1934. International grandmaster Paul Keres spent part of his youth in Pärnu, and his connection with the town is commemorated in public space. The memorial by artist Mare Mikoff was unveiled in 1996. The sculpture draws attention to Estonian chess history and to a man whose achievements were known far beyond Estonia. It can be viewed in the area in front of the school and combined with a walk through the streets of Pärnu's Old Town. It is a standalone sculpture, not a museum exhibition.
