Tallinn's Old Town

Tallinn Old Town is a rare example of a historical centre that has preserved not only individual monuments, but also its medieval urban structure: the street network, fortification walls and towers, churches, merchant houses, courtyards, and old plot boundaries. The main part of its recognizable appearance took shape between the 13th and 16th centuries, when the city, then known as Reval, developed as an important member of the Hanseatic League. In 1997, the historic centre of Tallinn was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to the high degree of preservation and integrity of its urban environment. Here you can walk from the Lower Town to Toompea, climb the viewing platforms, explore the fortification towers and quiet courtyards. At the same time, the Old Town remains a living part of the capital with museums, cafes, craft workshops, and cultural events, which is why it is best experienced not as a single monument, but as a large, independent route.
