Tartu Old Observatory

The Old Observatory of Tartu is one of the key sites in the city's scientific history and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Struve Geodetic Arc. The building on Toomemägi was constructed in the early 19th century and became an important center for astronomy and geodesy. Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve worked here, and his research became part of the history of measuring the Earth and stellar distances. Today, the observatory features historical scientific instruments, exhibitions on astronomy, geodesy, and seismology, as well as a tower and balcony offering views of downtown Tartu. There is no elevator in the building, so access to the tower is via a narrow historical staircase.
