Tartu Art Museum – Leaning House

The Leaning House on Raekoja plats is both one of the most unusual architectural features in central Tartu and an exhibition house of the Tartu Art Museum. The three-storey building was constructed in 1793 on soft soil near the Emajõgi River; over time, one side of the foundation settled, giving the house a noticeable tilt of about 5.8 degrees—more than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Following restoration, the subsidence was halted. Today, exhibitions of Estonian and contemporary art are held inside, making the venue interesting in two ways: as a recognizable city landmark and as an active art museum. Its location right on Raekoja plats makes it easy to include in a walk through the historical center.
