From a Barrel to a Museum Object

“From a Barrel to a Museum Object” is a special programme at the Tartu City Museum that reveals what goes on behind the scenes in preserving and conserving museum objects. Conservation specialist Carola Kanarbik presents the conservation of a wooden barrel found during excavations at the Siuru Cultural Centre site and explains what happens to archaeological finds and other objects once they reach the museum. Using Tartu 2024 objects as examples, the importance of digitisation in documenting and preserving collections is also discussed. The visit offers a chance to understand how an object becomes a scientifically described and preserved museum piece. Up to 15 participants can enter the storage rooms at a time.
