Mar 8 – Nov 1Köler 200: Biography and Reproductions at the Viljandi MuseumJohann Köler's jubilee exhibition at the Viljandi Museum introduces the artist's biography and painting oeuvre. On display are one hundred full-sized reproductions, allowing visitors to compare motifs of works belonging to various collections and follow the author's development. The works are presented chronologically, from the early years to the final paintings, and are accompanied by texts revealing the artist's journey. Curated by Kristjan Mändmaa, the exhibition is part of the project "Köler 200: Original, Copy, Interpretation". The museum section is open until November 1st, from Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 6 PM.
Sep 19 – Nov 8Avarilmad pildis: Nikolai Baturin Book IllustrationsThe exhibition “Avarilmad pildis” opens up the visual side of Nikolai Baturin's work at the Kondas Centre in Viljandi. Compiled for the writer's 90th birth anniversary, the display introduces his activity as an illustrator of his own books. Alongside original drawings, visitors can view objects, photographs and books originating from museums, a library and the family archive. The exhibition was put together by Mare Hunt and Mari Vallikivi. The display helps to notice how the worlds depicted in Baturin's texts continue in his drawings. The exhibition is open until November 8; in autumn, the centre can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
Nov 107:00 PM – 08:15 PMLEMBE LOKK, MICHEL SCHICK & FRANCOIS PUYALTO – TRIBUTE TO LEONARD COHENThe concert by Lembe Lokk, Michel Schick and François Puyalto in the black hall of the Viljandi Culture Academy is dedicated to the songs of Leonard Cohen. France-based Estonian singer Lembe Lokk interprets the well-known repertoire with clarinettist and multi-instrumentalist Michel Schick and bass guitarist François Puyalto. The trio combines arrangements influenced by jazz, rock and improvisation with an intimate chamber sound. The “Secret Chords” concert is also part of the release tour for the group's second album “Traveling Light”, featuring distinctive interpretations of Cohen's work.

Halliste St. Anne's Church

Halliste St. Anne's Church is located in Pornuse village in Viljandi County and is a historic Lutheran sanctuary. The oldest stone parts of the church date back to the Middle Ages, but the building has repeatedly suffered from wars and fires. After the 1959 fire, the church stood in ruins for decades until it was restored in 1991. The interior features a remarkable black ceiling and an altarpiece created by Jüri Arrak. It is an active congregation church, and interior visits must be arranged in advance. This is a separate site from the churches in Suure-Jaani and Viljandi town.

The Fifth Step — premiere

“The Fifth Step” is a new Ugala Theatre production based on the play by David Ireland, premiering in the small hall in Viljandi on 7 November. The production focuses on two men whose conversations bring to light both painful memories and unexpectedly funny situations. Mart, who has completed the Alcoholics Anonymous programme, is the sponsor of the newcomer Lukas, and their relationship intertwines trust, self-disclosure and conflict. Alden Kirss and Riho Kütsar appear in the production directed by Andres Noormets. Tickets for the premiere are sold out. It is a drama built on the tense dialogue of two actors.
