Tartu Guide
Tartu is often called Estonia's intellectual capital, and it's a fair claim. The city built its early wealth as a Hanseatic trading town between the 13th and 16th centuries, but the moment that really shaped it came in 1632, when Sweden's King Gustav II Adolf founded a university here — Academia Gustaviana. It hasn't had an entirely smooth run since (the university even relocated briefly to Pärnu in 1699), but it has operated without interruption since 1802, and its students still give Tartu its restless, curious character today.

Why Tartu
Toome Hill carries the ruins of a 13th-century cathedral, which now overlook one of Northern Europe's oldest astronomical observatories still in use — a fitting pairing for a city built on ideas. The university has also given Tartu a real café culture and, unusually for a city outside Tallinn, a genuinely strong restaurant scene.
Tartu is best explored slowly — a climb up Toome Hill, an afternoon in a café full of students mid-argument, a museum built to spark curiosity rather than nostalgia.
