The city sits on the Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the Pärnu River, and its wide, sandy beach — backed by a pine park rather than a wall of high-rises — has drawn visitors since the 19th century, when the town first developed as a spa resort built around its mineral-rich mud and seawater treatments.

That spa tradition never disappeared; it grew into one of the most concentrated wellness scenes in the Baltics, with hotels built directly around treatment centres rather than treatment rooms added as an afterthought. Summer turns Pärnu into Estonia's unofficial festival capital — a run of concerts, open-air performances, and city-wide events fills the calendar from June through August, helped by long northern daylight hours. The shoulder seasons on either side are quieter and cheaper, and for many repeat visitors, the better time to actually come. Outside summer, Pärnu is a genuine year-round town: a working harbour, a resident population with its own restaurants and shops that don't depend on tourism, and a spa culture that runs on its own calendar entirely, independent of the beach season.
